Established on 25th February 1595, the Historical Archives of Goa holds the distinction of being one of Asia's oldest archives, with a history spanning 427 years. Originally founded by the Portuguese Government, the Department of Archives was officially established in 1930.
The Archives department, in its early years, engaged in archaeological surveys through committees known as 'archaeological committees.' This initiative resulted in a substantial accumulation of archaeological materials within the department.
In 1977, a Museum was inaugurated, marking a significant expansion for the department, which was subsequently renamed the Directorate of Archives, Archaeology, and Museum. By 1999, the Directorate underwent further restructuring, leading to the creation of the Directorate of Museum.
In the year 2022, a pivotal development occurred as the Directorate of Archives and Archaeology was bifurcated into two distinct and independent departments: the Department of Archives and the Department of Archaeology.
